Oscars 2025: Biggest winners and losers of the night

Another night filled with shock snubs, surprise wins and lengthy speeches.

It’s the biggest night on the movie calendar: the Academy Awards, where the Hollywood elite don their glitziest outfits and hit the red carpet, all in the hopes of bringing home a statue of a little golden man.

While this year’s ceremony was fairly controversy-free (there were no slaps or incorrect announcements, at least), there were still plenty of surprises.

The biggest talking point has to be Anora - a small indie drama about a love affair between a stripper and the son of a Russian oligarch - which swept the ceremony and bagged most of the top awards, including Best Picture.

The film’s star, relative newcomer Mikey Madison, beat out heavy favourite Demi Moore for Best Actress, while the film’s director, Sean Baker, became the first person ever to win four awards for the same film in the same ceremony. Quite a feat.

Anora also managed to beat out some stiff competition for the top prize, including critically acclaimed awards-magnets like The Brutalist and Bafta Best Film winner Conclave. And, of course, Emilia Pérez, which was the front-runner for a while with a whopping 13 nominations.

In the end, though, it seems like all of the controversies and criticisms surrounding the film - a lavish musical about a drug lord who changes gender - caught up with it, and Emilia Pérez only walked away with two gongs: Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Song for ‘El Mal’.

Elsewhere, to the surprise of no one, Kieran Culkin continued his awards sweep with a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his beloved turn in A Real Pain, while The BrutalistWicked and Dune: Part Two did well in the technical categories.

Read on for the full list of winners.
