Sky Cinema new releases: What’s on in September

Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) stars as a park ranger investigating a mysterious disappearance in the woods. It quickly becomes clear that this disappearance is much more mysterious than it initially seemed, and may have ties to the ranger’s past.

First time writer/director Teresa Sutherland, previously a writer on the outstanding Netflix horror series Midnight Mass, conjures up a creepy, atmospheric mystery that will keep audiences guessing to the very end.

The Three Musketeers: Milady - 6th September

The second part of director Martin Bourboulon’s epic adaptation of the classic Dumas adventure novel. This time the action switches to follow Eva Green’s (Casino Royale) wily Milady de Winter, a master manipulator, assassin and associate of uber-villain Cardinal Richelieu (Eric Ruf). Will she be able to thwart the heroic Musketeers and bump off the Duke of Buckingham (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd)?

Like the first part, this continuation promises action, adventure and some fabulously extravagant costumes. Also stars Vincent Cassel and François Civil.

Moving On - 7th September

Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda - reunited after seven seasons of the hit Netflix dramedy Grace and Frankie - star as estranged besties who reconnect at the funeral of a mutual friend… and hatch a plot to kill the friend’s widower.

A witty, fun comedy drama, but the real draw here has to be Tomlin and Fonda’s trademark banter, which is on full, sparkling display. Also stars Malcolm McDowell (Superman) and the late Richard Roundtree (Shaft) in one of his final screen roles.

Head Count - 8th September

A cool, high-concept little indie thriller. After escaping prison, Kat (Aaron Jakubenko) finds himself in a bad position - at the mercy of a mysterious assailant, with his own gun pointed at his head. Now he has to think back, and fast, to work out how many bullets he’s fired, and how many are left in the cylinder.

Sort of like that famous scene in Dirty Harry, from the other guy’s perspective, most of the movie is told in flashback as Kat tries to work out how he got here. Also stars Ryan Kwanten (True Blood).

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - 13th September

Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), the half-Atlantean superhero/king/reckless drunk otherwise known as Aquaman must team up with his evil half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) when a vengeful Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns with newfound power, and threatens to destroy the world. So, basically a normal Tuesday in Atlantis.

One of the final releases before the upcoming DC cinematic universe reboot, this is pretty standard superhero fare, although it retains the sense of giddy adventure that made the first movie a hit. Also stars Randall Park (Ant-Man and the Wasp), Dolph Ludgren (Rocky IV) and, inexplicably, Nicole Kidman (The Hours).

Paint - 14th September

Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson) is the king of Vermont public access television, thanks to his wildly popular painting show. At least until a younger artist begins to steal all the attention and he finds everything he loved slipping through his fingers.

Essentially a quirky, lightly fictionalised story about legendary TV artist Bob Ross getting into a painterly feud. Funny and off-kilter drama.

I Used To Be Funny - 15th September

A struggling stand-up comedian takes a job as a nanny for a troubled young girl. They bond quickly, but things take a dark turn when the girl disappears.

Equal parts funny, moving and tense, this comedy drama stars Rachel Sennott (Bottoms, Shiva Baby) as the charming, messy comic who takes it upon herself to find her missing charge.

Hounds of War - 20th September

It’s your classic setup: a team of highly-skilled mercenaries are betrayed by their commander and sent into a trap. The sole surviving member of the team then goes on a roaring rampage of revenge to get even with his former master.

Stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day).

Snack Shack - 21st September

Set in the early ‘90s, this tells the story of two young slackers who find themselves running the snack shack at their local pool - and also find themselves falling for the cool, no-nonsense lifeguard.

It’s an old school gross-out coming-of-age comedy, in the vein of summertime classics like Caddyshack and Superbad. Stars Gabriel LaBelle (The Fabelmans) and Conor Sherry (The Terminal List).

Black Dog - 22nd September

A bold, lyrical indie drama about two mismatched young lads who take a road trip out of London and into the wilds of the North. Along the way they’ll find themselves and realise that they have more in common than they realised.

Boasting a hip young cast (and old stalwart Paul Kaye), this was nominated for an award at the 2023 BFI London Film Festival. Stars relative newcomers Jamie Flatters and Keenan Munn-Francis.

One Life - 27th September

Credit: One Life | Official Trailer (Bleecker Street, YouTube)

A true-life tearjerker, starring the always-phenomenal Anthony Hopkins as Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton, a man who, in the lead-up to World War II, managed to rescue 669 children from the Nazis. The film follows Nicky as an old man, still struggling with his guilt over the children he couldn’t save, as he begins to come to terms with the impact he really had on hundreds of lives.

Nicky’s story was made famous by his appearance on talk show That’s Life in the late ‘80s, during which he was surprised by the children he saved - now adults - who comprised most of the audience. Bring the tissues for this one.

Blood For Dust - 28th September

A snowbound slice of neo-noir starring Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones) and Scoot McNairy (Speak No Evil). This tells the story of a travelling salesman who teams up with a small-time arms dealer to run cocaine across Montana.

McNairy is usually a dependable presence, and to be honest this is worth a watch for Harrington’s astonishing ‘tache alone.

The Persian Version - 29th September

Credit: THE PERSIAN VERSION | Official Trailer (Sony Pictures Classics, YouTube)

An anarchic comedy drama about a large, messy Iranian-American family. This follows the youngest (and only) daughter of the clan, Leila (Layla Mohammadi), as she attempts to figure out how to tell her mother that she is pregnant… and that the father is a drag queen.

Loosely based on writer/director Maryam Keshavarz’s own experiences, this is a bright, fizzy comedy filled with quirky characters.
