Sky Cinema new releases: What’s on in October

Lee - 1st November

Credit: LEE | Official Trailer (Sky Cinema, YouTube)

This starry Sky Original tells the true story of legendary American photojournalist Lee Miller (Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown), who determinedly documented the truth of the Nazi regime - at great personal cost.

It’s a fascinating slice of history and Winslet turns in an honest, unflinching performance as the pioneering photographer. Also stars (deep breath) Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman), Marion Cotillard (Inception), Josh O’Conner (The Crown) and Andrea Riseborough (Possessor)

Ordinary Angels - 2nd November

Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) and Alan Ritchson (Reacher) star in this tearjerker, based on a true story. It’s the inspirational story of an ordinary woman who is determined to help a struggling man and his two young daughters - one of whom needs a liver transplant - at any cost.

Sasquatch Sunset - 3rd November

It’s hard to be surprised by a movie these days, but sometimes a film comes along that’s truly unlike anything that’s come before.

Sasquatch Sunset is one of those films - a nature ‘documentary’ following the everyday exploits of a group of the folkloric forest creatures. There’s no dialogue, no human characters, and some stuff that you likely won’t have ever seen before…

Stars Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) and Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six), although you wouldn’t recognise either of them under all the fake fur and prosthetics.

The Holdovers - 8th November

An Oscar-winning comedy-drama from Alexander Payne, the filmmaker behind Sideways and The Descendants. Set in the ‘70s, this follows a curmudgeonly professor at a fancy prep school, who is forced to babysit the handful of students who have nowhere else to go during the winter break.

With a heartwarming story about dealing with grief and finding friendship in unlikely places, plus some award-worthy performances from Paul Giamatti (American Splendor), Dominic Sessa and Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Only Murders in the Building), this is a must-watch.

There’s Something in the Barn - 9th November

A Christmas comedy horror starring Martin Starr (Silicon Valley) as a well-meaning American father who moves his family to the isolated Norwegian house he has inherited.

As the family prepares for the holidays, the young son discovers an ancient gnome living in the barn - a creature that gets mad when the family refuses to follow its Christmas rules. Silly fun that definitely leans more comedy than horror.

Journey to Bethlehem - 10th November

A musical retelling of the Nativity story, starring Antonio Banderas (Desperado) as the wicked King Herod. This promises to bring lots of humour and humanity to the well-trodden story, as well as some genuinely catchy tunes.

Dune: Part Two - 15th November

The second half of Denis Villeneuve’s mammoth, blockbuster adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic. This picks up the story some time after the first film, as Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name) adjusts to life among the Fremen people of Arrakis and continues his vengeful crusade against the Harkonens.

Arguably even bigger and better than the first film, amping up both the action and the knotty philosophical questions of fate and prophecy, this is big-budget, high-concept sci-fi at its absolute best. And it’s essential viewing ahead of the new Dune: Prophecy TV show, on Sky Atlantic from 18th September.

Also stars Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Rebecca Ferguson (Doctor Sleep), Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men), Christopher Walken (Sleepy Hollow), Florence Pugh (Midsommar) and virtually every other actor working in Hollywood today.

Widow Clicquot - 16th November

Based on the best-selling biography, this is the true story of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot (Haley Bennett, Cyrano), the woman who suddenly found herself in control of a vineyard after her husband’s death, and successfully transformed it into a champagne empire.

Also stars Tom Sturridge (Sandman) and Sam Riley (Brighton Rock).

Tarot - 17th November

It’s your classic setup - a group of teens use a cursed Tarot deck and accidentally unleash malevolent evil force. The interesting stuff here is in the ghoulish creatures brought to life from the cards, and in the gruesome, Final-Destination-style deaths that await each of the unlucky teens.

IF - 22nd November

Credit: IF | Final Trailer (Paramount Pictures, YouTube)

A family-friendly fantasy adventure from writer/director John Krasinski (Jim from The Office).

A young girl discovers that she has the ability to see other kids’ imaginary friends - or IFs for short - and must use that power to help reunite lost IFs with their children. Packed full of cute, imaginative creatures, this should be a fun watch for the whole family.

Stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool & Wolverine), with the voice talents of Steve Carrell (The Office), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and many more.

Girl You Know It’s True - 23rd November

A biopic of ‘80s popstars Milli Vanilli, who infamously were revealed to not have sung the vocals on any of their songs. That little wrinkle alone should make this a fascinating look into fame and the music industry as a whole.

Thanksgiving - 24th November

Eli Roth (Hostel) adapts the short, fake trailer he made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez’s Grindhouse, turning it into a feature-length gore-filled slasher.

With tongue firmly in cheek (and knife firmly in chest), this is essentially I Know What You Did Last Black Friday, with some very inventive, over-the-top death scenes, all themed around the titular holiday.

Monkey Man - 29th November

Credit: Monkey Man | Official Trailer (Universal Pictures, YouTube)

From producer Jordan Peele (Get Out) and star/writer/director Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), this is a kinetic, brutal action thriller inspired by Indian legends.

A young man, raised on the streets, makes his living taking beatings in a savage underground fight club. But when he finds a way to get back at the sinister elites who run his city, he becomes a one-man army in a monkey mask.

Absolution - 30th November

When an ageing ex-boxer (Liam Neeson, Taken) discovers that he doesn’t have long to live, he’s determined to make things right with his estranged family. But the Boston mobster he works for (Ron Perlman, Hellboy) won’t let him get out of the criminal life that easily.
