Trailer round-up: Super Bowl special

The most exciting new movie trailers revealed during the big game

The Super Bowl - inarguably America’s biggest yearly sporting event - has long been the place for movie studios to showcase their upcoming releases. With an average of more than 80 million viewers, the game is usually a marketing extravaganza, and this year was no different.

Most of the major studios released new spots, although they tended to be quite short, given the astronomical price tag - roughly $8million for 30 seconds of air time. But there’s still plenty of good stuff to get excited about.

Check out our latest Weekend Roundup, too, for more on the game itself.

In cinemas 2nd May

Easily the highlight of the bunch is this full-length trailer for Marvel’s upcoming antihero adventure, which seems to get more eagerly anticipated amongst fans with every bit of footage released.

This latest trailer reveals (to an extent) the mysterious, shadowy villain that our team of lovable rogues will be going up against. Comic fans will certainly have their theories about this particular bad ‘un, but whoever they turn out to be, it’s clear that the Thunderbolts have an uphill battle ahead of them.

With a roster featuring a handful of super soldiers, an intangible assassin and Black Widow’s little sister, the ‘Bolts will be facing off against a godlike being that can seemingly reduce people to ash with the merest gesture.

As Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova says: ‘What, we all just punch and shoot?’

Jurassic World: Rebirth

In cinemas 2nd July

Snapping at the heels of the first full trailer, released only last week, comes this Big Game spot for the latest entry in the beloved, long-running franchise. While it doesn’t show a lot of new stuff, this spot continues the emphasis on the new cast - lead by Scarlett Johansson - the new dinosaurs and the new, more adventurous tone.

There’s also another glimpse of the monstrous new big bad, which looks a bit like a cross between King Kong and a xenomorph. Raptors and genetic abominations? Sign us up.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

In cinemas 23rd May

Could this be Tom Cruise’s final mission? That’s the rumour, and this brief spot doesn’t do anything to convince fans otherwise.

There’s the ominous voiceover, the flashbacks to missions past, the smiles and hugs - all of it points to this being something of a swansong for superspy Ethan Hunt. And, to be fair, Cruise isn’t getting any younger.

Maybe it’s time to stop hanging from aeroplanes in midair?

F1

In cinemas Summer 2025

He has the need; the need for speed. Again. Looking to do for motorsports what he did for fighter jets in Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski returns to the world of fast-moving vehicles in this summer’s racing epic F1.

This first-look teaser is mostly wordless, focussing instead on the high-octane action, but it’s no less impressive for that. Employing the same techniques that worked so well in Maverick, F1 puts the camera - and its stars, including Brad Pitt and Damson Idris - inside actual Formula 1 cars as they speed around the track.

Exciting stuff.

Lilo & Stitch

In cinemas 23rd May

A fun teaser here for Disney’s upcoming live action adaptation of the beloved 2002 animated adventure. In a meta twist, chaotic alien Stitch runs amok at the game itself, eluding groundskeepers and security before eventually crashing a golf cart into the goal.

It’s classic Stitch behaviour, and fits in nicely with the rest of the marketing campaign for this movie so far, which has seen the furry blur rascal interfering with various Disney classics.

How to Train Your Dragon

In cinemas 13th June

Finally, a new look at another upcoming live action adaptation - this time DreamWorks’ modern classic, How To Train Your Dragon.

Hewing very closely to the source material - it’s frame-for-frame in a lot of places - this is sure to please fans of the animated franchise. And if it’s half as good as the original, it’s sure to be a must-see movie this summer.
