Weekend news roundup 10/02: Super Bowl champions & new trailers

Plus England rugby, cricket & box office latest.

Eagles embarrass Chiefs to claim second Super Bowl title

The Philadelphia Eagles successfully avenged their Super Bowl 57 loss by storming to a resounding victory in Super Bowl 59, preventing the Kansas City Chiefs from making NFL history.

What was expected to be a closely contested and tightly fought game ended up being a rout by the Eagles, who entered the contest as slight underdogs.

But you wouldn’t have guessed as much as they ran riot on the defending champions, both on offence and on defence, preventing the Chiefs from ever getting going.

The Eagles basically had the game wrapped up by the end of the first half, putting up 24 unanswered points and keeping the Chiefs to only one first down and just offensive 23 yards.

Philadelphia became a city of champions once again by essentially as early as the last few minutes of the third quarter, but while the Chiefs did manage to remember how to play towards the end of the game and picked up some humility-saving touchdowns, the final score of 40-22 was nothing short of an utter embarrassment.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts took home Super Bowl MVP honours after commanding his team sensationally, throwing for 221 yards from 17-22 passing with two touchdowns.

New trailers from the big game

Being the biggest and most lucrative final in American sports, the Super Bowl ad spots are a perfect time for new releases and reveals - and we were treated to plenty of new trailers last night for some of 2025s most anticipated flicks.

Most ads and trailers keep to the 30 seconds limit due to said spot alone costing a company a whopping $8m.

Tom Cruises’ final outing as Ethan Hunt was given a quick glimpse in the latest teaser reveal for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, including some of the death-defying stunts that are to come.

Stitch managed to break onto the field in a comical quick teaser for the upcoming live action Lilo & Stitch film from Disney.

Jurassic World Rebirth was given double the time, showing off some more of the adventure that is to come latest in the year.

But it was Marvel who stole the trailer show in many people's eyes, producing a full two and a half minute look at Thunderbolts*, the next film from the MCU this year after Captain America: Brave New World.

England best France to ignite Six Nations hopes

England have ignited the thoughts of a Six Nations title after stunning France with a dramatic dying moments try to take a 26-25 victory.

The hosts looked set to claim another close loss to a superior opponent, a sight fans have become all too familiar with, but with under 90 seconds left on the clock, Fin Smith and Elliot Daly linked up superbly to produce the game winning score and help bludgeon the memories of the humiliating 53-10 loss in the same fixture just two years prior.

It was a case of England maintaining their performance throughout rather than fading towards the end, as has become all too familiar. It also helped that France weren’t at their very best, squandering more than a few try-scoring opportunities.

In the end, though, the final result is a major boost for England. Taking six points from their first two games against the two favourites for the competition will no doubt be a warranted boost to the squad, who may now feel capable of attacking their remaining three fixtures.

Dog Man remains top of the box office

Dog Man has claimed its second consecutive box office crown after bringing in $13.7m domestically over the weekend.

The latest DreamWorks animation has gone down a treat with US audiences, and its release in the UK this past weekend has followed suit, claiming the top spot here too.

Bringing in $3.9m (£3.1m) in the UK, Dog Man is the second biggest debutant so far this year, behind Robert Eggers gothic horror Nosferatu, which saw $6.5m (£5.2m) its opening weekend.

India claim ODI series win over England

England’s series in India has proved fruitless as they lost the second ODI, allowing the hosts the spoils once again to claim the overall tour victory.

After posting a positive 304 benchmark for India to chase, England failed to put up any real stand against their opponent, allowing Rohit Sharma to inspire his side with 119 off 90 balls as the opener.

Eventually winning by four wickets, India claimed the ODI series victory after taking the first match with ease last Thursday. Along with the hosts 4-1 IT20 series victory prior to the ODI’s, there has been largely nothing for England to shout about during the tour.

They’ll have one last go at victory in the third ODI on Wednesday, and they will no doubt be hoping for a better showing, with their next scheduled ODI coming in their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday 22nd February.
