Weekly trailer roundup 23/01

The biggest, most exciting new movie and TV trailers this week.

We live in a golden age of entertainment, with great new movies and TV shows being released all the time. There’s so much, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track of what’s coming, and what to get excited about.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the biggest and best trailers released this week. And there’s some good stuff on the horizon, featuring everything from high school cannibals to cyberterrorists and sinister children’s toys.

Movies

Opus

In cinemas 14th March

Coming across as sort of like The Menu, but about music, Opus is psychological thriller starring Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as a journalist chosen to interview a reclusive musical megastar (John Malkovich).

This musician lives on an isolated compound, surrounded by worryingly devoted fans - a cult, essentially - and is about to release an unprecedented new album. A piece of work that may be much stranger and more sinister than anyone expects.

Much like The Menu, this looks to be a darkly funny examination of fame and fandom, and Malkovich seems to be having the time of his life.

Mickey 17

In cinemas 7th March

Acclaimed filmmaker Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) returns to the idiosyncratic dystopian sci-fi leanings of his earlier work (see Snowpiercer or Okja) in this bonkers-looking adaptation of the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton.

Robert Pattinson (The Batman) plays an ‘expendable’ - a low-level worker who is thrust into potentially dangerous situations and cloned in the event of an untimely death. Things begin to unravel when he discovers that another version of himself is still alive.

This one looks pretty unique, and it has a typically all-star cast, including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette.

The Monkey

THE MONKEY - Official Redband Trailer (NEON, YouTube)

In cinemas 21st February

Osgood Perkins, the director of last summer’s surprise horror hit Longlegs, returns with a gonzo, extremely bloody adaptation of the short story by Stephen King.

Twin brothers, both played by Theo James (The Gentlemen), fall foul of a mysterious, magical monkey toy that causes bizarre, gruesome deaths whenever it beats its tiny drum. It’s a mad idea, and Perkins seems to be revelling in the chance to conjure up some strange, Rube Goldberg-esque carnage.

Looks to be a lot more fun than his last effort.

Drop

In cinemas 11th April

A psychological action thriller from the director of Happy Death Day and Freaky? Sign us up!

Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) plays a single mother trying to get back into the world of dating. Things seem to be going well until a mysterious person starts to AirDrop threatening messages onto her phone.

Messages that say her young son will be killed if she doesn’t follow their instructions. What follows looks to be a tense, paranoid thriller in which anyone could be the culprit.

Hell of a Summer

In cinemas 18th April

Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), alongside Billy Bryk, makes his directorial debut with this fun-looking throwback to classic ‘80s slasher movies.

It’s got everything you need: a summer camp setting, a masked killer and a cast of expendable teens, just begging to find the business end of a pitchfork. Wolfhard himself appears alongside rising stars Fred Hechinger (Gladiator II), Abby Quinn (Knock at the Cabin) and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs).

TV Shows

Yellowjackets

Season 3 on Paramount+ from 14th February

After a long, long wait, mystery horror hit Yellowjackets finally returns to screens this February - and just in time for Valentine’s Day too. In case you missed the first two seasons, the show follows two concurrent timelines.

Back in the ‘90s, we follow a group of teenage girls stranded in a vast wilderness after a plane crash, and the terrible lengths they go to survive. And in modern day, we follow the now-grown-up survivors of the ordeal as they try to keep the secrets of what happened in the woods from unravelling their lives.

With a fantastic cast of off-kilter screen legends - Christina Ricci (The Addams Family), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Juliette Lewis (From Dusk Till Dawn) - and up-and-coming stars - Ella Purnell (Fallout), Sophie Thatcher (Heretic), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream VI) - this is unmissable TV.

Zero Day

Season 1 on Netflix from 20th February

Robert DeNiro stars in this techy political thriller, as a former president tasked to discover the culprits behind a massive, catastrophic cyberterror attack on the United States.

This looks like classic paranoid, goes-all-the-way-to-the-top conspiracy stuff, with a modern angle and an absolutely stellar cast, including Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Connie Britton (Nashville), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things) and Angela Bassett (Black Panther).
