Weekly news roundup & weekend watches 19/12: Once more for 2024!
Superman, Black Panther and… Liam Lawson?
Perez out, Lawson in
Red Bull has finally decided their driver lineup for 2025, confirming that Sergio Perez will be departing the team and young Liam Lawson will be taking his place.
The news of Perez’s exit comes as little shock to fans. His poor 2024 season cost the team the chance of retaining the Constructors’ Championship and despite signing a contract extension earlier in the year, the writing had been on the wall for some time.
As for who would take his place, again it doesn’t seem too surprising to see Lawson picked, although Yuki Tsunoda being overlooked once again has left a sour taste in most fans’ mouths.
Lawson has been touted for a seat with the team for some time, after missing out on a full-time drive for 2024. He was eventually given a seat for the latter stages of the season though, and that has seemingly been enough evidence for Red Bull to promote him to the main team.
This was despite being outperformed by Tsunoda, who has consistently beaten his teammates in the Red Bull sister team since Pierre Gasly left following the 2022 season.

After releasing a teaser trailer yesterday, the first full trailer for the highly anticipated new Superman film has been revealed.
There is a heavy weight of expectation for the film given it will be the first official entry into the new James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Universe.
Following much speculation and many leaked set photos, the trailer has finally been delivered, and delivered it has, showcasing not just David Corenswet, who will be playing Superman, but also many other DC Heroes, plus
The film is said not to be an origin story but instead a journey for a younger Man of Steel that explores both his Earth side and Kryptonian heritage.
The film is slated for release on 11th July 2025.
Everton takeover complete
Everton will be entering into a new era as the Friedkin Groups (TFG) takeover has finally been completed.
The new owners, led by American billionaire Dan Friedkin, have acquired a majority stake in the club in a deal that reportedly cost TFG over £400m.
Friedkin’s acquisition of Everton adds to his portfolio, making this the second football team he owns after purchasing AS Roma back in 2020.
The deal took 18 months to process, a long slog for fans who have had to endure turbulent times that has seen the club almost relegated from the Premier League for the first time ever.
Now, the new owners, and incoming executive chairman Marc Watts in particular, have stated their intent to bring stability and success back to the historic club.
Feige confirms Black Panther 3
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has officially confirmed that a third installment of the Black Panther films will be coming.
The announcement was expected after Denzel Washington let slip last month that he would be appearing in the film while doing press for his latest film, Gladiator 2.
Washington’s semi-reveal didn’t expose everything, only mentioning that Ryan Coogler, director of the first and second installment, is currently writing a part for him in his third film.
Today, Feige officially announced the reality of Black Panther 3, although not much else has been revealed as of now, and likely nothing will be for some time.
