Plus box office latest, international cricket & another golf champion…

England and Australia tie T20I series

England and Australia will have to make do with a draw to their three-game T20I series after the third match at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester was abandoned due to poor weather conditions.

Australia had won the first game at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, with the home side never seemingly able to get things going when on strike, losing by 28 runs in the end.

It was looking like potentially the same story in the second at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff until Liam Livingstone, who would go on to win PLayer of the Series, stepped up to hit a series-best 87 from 47 deliveries, putting England in place to win by three wickets.

With the deciding game called off due to persistent rain, we move on now to the five-game ODI series, starting on Thursday 19th September at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Captain Jos Buttler remains out of the squad due to a calf injury, with Harry Brook taking over captain duties for the series.

Beetlejuice sequel surpasses $250m domestic mark

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to the 1988 classic Beetlejuice, has fared well at the box office again, earning $51.6m domestically in its second week to retain the second spot over newly released Speak No Evil.

The film, starring Michael Keaton’s return as “the Ghost with the Most”, has surpassed the quarter of a billion mark in its worldwide box office total - $188m domestically plus a further $76.3m internationally giving it a strong $264.3m worldwide total.

As for the James McAvoy-led Speak No Evil, the psychological horror has earned $20m worldwide so far, with $11.5m coming domestically and $9.3m internationally. While fairly low compared to the number one spot, it has at least performed well considering its $15m budget - although that was before prints and advertising.

Team USA regains Solheim Cup

Team USA beat Team Europe over the weekend to claim the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2017, with 15.5-12.5.

Heading into Sunday’s singles, USA held a strong 10-6 advantage and required 4.5 points to claim their long-awaited victory.

Europe put on a mighty challenge, with Charley Hull leading the way by thrashing world number one Nelly Korda followed by Georgia Hall’s big win.

But while the Europe charge was strong, finishing with 6.5 points on the final day, Lilia Vu’s comeback to tie her match gave Team USA the half-point they needed for the victory at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.

Shogun biggest winner at Emmys

The 76th Emmy Awards, celebrating the best of television from the past year, happened over the weekend and saw Shogun come away as arguably the biggest winner, taking home 18 of its 25 nominations (when counting the Creative Arts Emmys).

It took home some of the biggest awards of the night, including Emmys for Drama Series, Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Hiroyuki Sanada), Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Anna Sawai), and Directing for a Drama Series (Frederick E.O. Toye). Its 18 wins set a record for the most wins by a show in a single season.

FX’s The Bear also broke its own record it set last year, winning 11 Emmys including Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Liza Colon-Zayas) and Directing for a Comedy Series (Christopher Storer).

Baby Reindeer was also the biggest winner in its category of Limited or Anthology Series, winning the Best Series award, plus Best Lead Actor, Supporting Actress and Writing.

Rahm victorious in debut LIV Golf campaign

Jon Rahm emerged from the LIV Golf Chicago weekend after carding a bogey-free 66 on the final day, taking his second victory in three starts after his win at the LIV Golf UK event.

Rahm's victories, along with top-10 finishes at all 12 regular-season tournaments that he finished, see him claim the title of LIV Golf League Individual Champion, plus the nice $18m bonus on top of the $4m for the weekend event victory.

His win wasn’t enough for his team though, as 2024 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC took the team victory. 

The final event of the 2024 LIV Golf campaign will be the LIV Golf Team Championship Dallas. DeChambeau’s Crushers currently head the team standings with 208.5 points, but they have Rahm’s Legion XIII breathing down their necks, sitting at 200 points.
